film review: let the right one in

I guess I'm a little late to the party, but I just watched Let the Right One In (original Swedish: Låt den rätte komma in), and it was one of the best films I've seen in years. It was just beautiful to look at and so subtle. It's about a young misfit boy, Oskar, who is relentlessly bullied at school. He makes friends with the girl who has moved into the flat next to him, Eli. She turns out to be a vampire and she encourages him to stand up for himself. This is truly one of the best vampire films I've seen in ages, and yeah, I know they're so in right now. But really, this film has the blood, violence, and lack of sparkles you'd expect from a vampire movie, all handled with such grace and charm that the whole "vampire" thing is completely secondary to the relationship between the two friends. It was simply wonderful and I adored it. I'm going to start reading the book asap.
